Latin and Classical Civilisation at ºìÐÓÊÓƵ supports children in their general development of language, literacy, logical thinking, critical reasoning, as well as an understanding of a historical context to the modern world.
Children are introduced to Classical Civilisation in Year 5 which offers a first glimpse into the Roman world, exploring aspects of Roman culture, classical architecture, entertainment and spiritual life in the form of mythology and the Roman gods.
In Year 6, Latin is introduced using a fresh and colourful approach which sets the language in its interesting social and cultural context. Children begin to learn the key grammatical and vocabulary elements which we continue to build on through Years 7 and 8, all the while maintaining diverse and interesting links with art, culture, entertainment, history and mythology.
Ensuring that the children have fun while learning is paramount and we support and stimulate their interest using a wide variety of teaching methods, resources, activities and games. The department is well-resourced with iPads, interactive boards, access to numerous Latin websites and Apps, as well as books, and a plethora of other visual aids. All the children have the opportunity to visit the Roman Palace at Fishbourne in Sussex and the Roman baths in the beautiful and historic town of Bath in Somerset. We also hold our own Latin events where the children can experience cooking and eating Roman food, playing Roman games and performing short mythological stories.
