Over the last few weeks, our Pre-School children have been treated to some very special visitors — a colony of caterpillars that have taken up residence in their classroom! The children have been absolutely fascinated, watching in wonder as their tiny guests transformed into beautiful butterflies right before their eyes.
Through this magical experience, the children have been exploring the butterfly lifecycle and developing a range of important skills along the way. Observing the journey from tiny egg to caterpillar, chrysalis, and finally butterfly has introduced them to key scientific habits such as close observation, questioning, and tracking changes over time. It has also sparked rich conversations, with the children eagerly picking up descriptive new vocabulary like "metamorphosis" and "cocoon."
Beyond the science, this project has been a wonderful opportunity for the children to learn patience, gentleness, and respect for living things. Their enthusiasm carried beautifully into the classroom, where they worked in pairs to create stunning butterfly and caterpillar collages using natural materials, a lovely exercise in creativity, teamwork, and communication. We couldn't be prouder of how they have embraced this project!
