Peer Teaching Project: Year 8 Supporting Year 4 Maths

Wed 01 Apr 2026

Our Year 8 students took on an exciting leadership challenge in the last week of term as they planned and delivered a full Maths lesson for Year 4, exploring the fascinating world of Ancient Number Systems.

The project brought history and mathematics together, with Year 8 pupils introducing younger learners to a range of numerical traditions including Egyptian hieroglyphic numerals, Roman numerals, Chinese numbers, Tamil digits, Norse numbers, and Aztec counting systems.

What made the lesson truly impressive was that every activity, resource, and game was designed entirely by the Year 8s themselves. They created everything from bingo boards and snakes and ladders style games to murder-mystery challenges and interactive online quizzes using platforms such as Kahoot and Blooket. Their creativity and attention to detail meant the Year 4s were not only learning but fully immersed in the experience.

This initiative gave our older pupils the chance to develop leadership, communication, and teamwork skills, while the younger children benefited from engaging, peer-led learning. The atmosphere in the classrooms was buzzing, with both year groups clearly enjoying the opportunity to learn from one another.

Projects like this help to further enhance positive relationships throughout the school and empower pupils to take ownership of their learning. Our Year 8s rose to the challenge brilliantly, and we are incredibly proud of the confidence and maturity they demonstrated.
