Year 2 Take Maths Learning Outdoors

Wed 14 Oct 2026

Year 2 enjoyed an exciting opportunity last week to take their learning beyond the classroom, exploring maths in a fun, active, and creative way. Using chalk and outdoor activities, the children worked both collaboratively and independently at their own pace, demonstrating that learning can happen anywhere.

As part of their mathematics lessons, the pupils focused on developing their understanding of counting in tens. By starting at zero and making jumps forwards and backwards in tens, they began to recognise patterns within our number system while strengthening their confidence with place value.

Once secure in this skill, the children challenged themselves further by starting from a variety of two-digit numbers and counting on in tens. Through their investigations, they quickly discovered that while the tens digit changes, the ones digit remains the same, helping to deepen their mathematical understanding.

Counting in tens is an important foundation for many areas of learning, including addition and subtraction, working with larger numbers, calculating with money, reading scales and measures, and developing multiplication skills.
