Book Week

Mon 08 Feb 2016
Book Week flew by in a flurry of author visits, competitions and activities. Every day, two ‘Mystery Readers’ appeared in the Dining Hall to regale Lower School pupils with the tale of a baby vampire, ‘Vlad the Drac’. A book-themed treasure hunt outside kept Years 3 and 4 entertained despite the rather windswept conditions. Visiting authors included Paul Dowswell, a writer of historical fiction, who spoke to Year 7 about the backdrop to his First World War novel, ‘Eleven Eleven’ and to Year 8 about his Second World War novel, ‘Ausländer’. He also led creative writing workshops for small groups of pupils. Years 3, 4, 5 and 6 were royally entertained by Ali Sparkes, the author of nearly 50 books, including the Blue Peter award winning, ‘Frozen in Time’. A former comedy writer for Radio 4, Ali spoke with great enthusiasm about how she became an author and even showed us her first book, ‘Webster Week Out’ written when she was at school! Her books are now being read avidly by many ºìÐÓÊÓƵ’ pupils! During the week, photos of pupils reading favourite books in creative poses were screened around the School and a ‘design a bookmark’ competition also took place. We also enjoyed ‘Harry Potter Thursday’ where pupils used the ‘Sorting Hat’ to determine which House they were in and then as a House group they did some quizzes on the books. A story-telling session took place on Friday: pupils and staff sat by a roaring log fire in the Front Hall and, using ‘story dice’, made up an entertaining story about the dastardly exploits of one ‘Ocatavius Octopus’! All in all, a busy and bookish time!
