Year 1 Digital Innovators in the Making

Thu 15 Oct 2026

Digital innovation is taught from a young age at ºìÐÓÊÓƵ. This week our Year 1 pupils enjoyed an exciting introduction to the world of coding, developing essential skills in encouraging creativity, problem solving, and collaboration.

Their challenge began with a special letter from the Mayor of Robot Town, who needed help programming a team of robots to carry out important tasks. Inspired by their mission, the children worked together to explore a range of coding commands, discovering what each instruction meant and how sequences of commands could be used to control the robots’ movements.

As they tested and adapted their programmes, the pupils quickly learned that computers and robots can only follow the instructions they are given. This encouraged them to think carefully, communicate clearly and persevere when things did not go quite as planned. Through teamwork and discussion, they developed a deeper understanding of how technology works while building confidence in their own problem-solving abilities.

It was wonderful to see the children so engaged and enthusiastic as they embraced the challenge. Their determination and willingness to work together helped them become true coding experts for the day, all while having great fun.

Experiences such as these help to nurture computational thinking from an early age and inspire our pupils to become confident, creative users of technology in an increasingly digital world.
