Elaine Forsyth, Head of Pre-Prep 1980-2019 awarded British Empire Medal

Thu 28 Apr 2022

We are delighted that Mrs Elaine Forsyth, Head of Pre-Prep from 1980-2019 has been awarded the medal of the most Excellent Order of the British Empire, for services to education in Surrey, in the Queen's New Years Honours List 2022.

Elaine took over The ºìÐÓÊÓƵ Pre-Prep in 1980, six months after it opened. She taught the single class of nine children in the sitting room of Little Thorns, the dining room became the assembly room and library and the utility room their cloakroom. Under her guidance the Pre-Prep thrived and grew to a vibrant 240 pupils.

Elaine is recognised, throughout her career, for encouraging children to learn in the outdoors and appreciate their natural environment. Elaine's own small holding adjacent to the School's site, home to goats, sheep, chickens and other animals was frequently used as a teaching tool and ºìÐÓÊÓƵ Pre-Prep children regularly visited this resource for a unique learning experience. Elaine worked closely with architects and builders to create our purpose built, eco-friendly Reception & Lower School building, which opened in 2011. It's many ecological features such as rainwater harvesting, natural ventilation and a green roof with its own wild meadow help to teach the children to be aware of their surroundings and the importance of sustainability.

As a current Governor of Furzefield Community Primary School, Elaine has played a key role in updating and improving child protection procedures within the school.

Elaine is also now working as a part-time cover teacher at Reigate Grammar School. During the pandemic, Elaine looked after key workers' children in school and oversaw and ran the logistics of weekly Covid testing, supporting children through the process.

The British Empire Medal was presented by Her Majesty's Lord-Lieutenant of Surrey, Mr Michael More-Molyneux at a ceremony held earlier this moth at Loseley House. Elaine has also been invited to attend a Garden Party at Buckingham Palace in May.
