From bee trails to badgers: Reception's spring adventure in the woods

Mon 18 May 2026

Last week, Reception pupils headed out into our school woods for an exciting Forest School lesson, exploring the natural world around them as spring gets fully underway.

The children took a close look at rhododendron flowers, discovering the delicate markings that act as a guide for bees, directing them towards the nectar. They also learned an important lesson about treading carefully in nature, bluebells, they found out, can take many years to grow back if trampled underfoot.

The class discussed nocturnal animals and, with great curiosity, set up our wildlife camera in the woods to see what creatures might emerge once the school day was over.

The next morning brought with it a wonderful surprise. The children were thrilled to discover that their woods had been quite busy overnight, with footage revealing visits from a variety of birds, rabbits, a badger, and a fox!

It was a wonderful reminder of the rich wildlife right on our doorstep, and a lesson the children are unlikely to forget any time soon.
