Year 7 inspired by Gamelan workshop

Mon 18 Jan 2016

Last week Year 7 were treated to the opportunity to play a Javenese Gamelan. The blue instruments strongly contrasted with the red of the neighbouring Balinese tradition. The children learnt to play a piece using the pentatonic scale. The repetitive nature encouraged a sense of mindfulness through focus on unity and teamwork.

Pupils were then challenged to take responsibility for their own part, playing double notes on the smaller instruments and missing out elements, but staying in time, with the larger.

The grandeur of the orchestra together with the tradition of removing shoes and not stepping over the instruments led to the authenticity of the learning experience. A wonderful afternoon had by all!
